1907 - postcard from Cecil, 11 years old, to her mother and sister
CECIL WRITES MOMMA: GUTTENBERG VISIT BEGINS, BASEBALL GAME AND GUESTS EXPECTED.
  • "A.W." might be her sister Alo White. If it does say "Gam" then that likely means a grandparent. Caddie is her aunt, the sister of Blanche and Eva. Family lore says that Cecil sometimes remarked her mother could be cold, and the plaintive "momma why don't you write' supports that .

  • Postcard from Cecil to Her Mother and Sister

I received A.W. postal this morning. Guttenberg is here but I have not seen one that I know of yet. Momma, why don't you write. I expect we will be very busy after we come from B game. Hartmonds are coming tomorrow."
    – Cecil

    • Scrolled Parchment Theme
July 27, 1907, was a Saturday. A newspaper article published Aug 2 shows there was a ball game the previous Saturday, the 27th, between Guttenberg and Volga, which matches the date of her postcard. Cecil is writing that the Guttenberg ball team and baseball fans are in Volga. Cecil writes: • "Guttenberg is here.." She might be referring to the store when she writes • "we will be very busy once we come from the B game".
"Gam wants to know if Caddie is coming home with you..I guess all the ??? are home from ???"
"Gam" was a term commonly used to refer to a grandmother. "Gamps" would have referred to a grandfather (as in "grand-pa"). At this time, both of Cecil's grandmothers were alive (Lura Celinda White and Polly Ann Tenney.)
